Unethical and Dishonest (Stole over $140) - Review by Clover Carroll submitted on July 22, 2003

This company has chared me for services that I have never used. I only found this out when the card number that they had expired and they started to send me collection notices. They are unethical and dishonest. They have in effect stolen over $140 dollars from me.

Don't trust them. They are thieves

Letter to Hostsave
Renee Stagnaro

After much trouble with your service I wrote hostsave and cancelled my service with you on October 02, 2002 (please read the notes below). It looks as if Najam I failed to communicate with your dept. I know that his message was for me to contact billing myself, however this is not how a professional business like yourself should conduct itself. I am assuming that Najam I was in error when they choose this action. It seems that the only reason you are contacting me was because you are not able to receive payment (due to an expired credit card number) on a
service that I don't even have. Since the credit carded expired only recently I am assuming that you might have been billing me for service that I am not receiving. I will check my bank records. If this in fact is the case I would like a refund for the amount that I have been billed up to this date. Once again I have never used your service.

Sincerely
Clover Carroll

A class action suit is probably in order against this web hosting company. Call their toll free number and you get a message with a regular long distance number.  Call that number you get a 5 second message "Were Working On The Problem" click.  The site has been down for a week and the last message from them was 3 days ago.  Sorry guys.  They claim they are the victim of a denial of service (DOS) attack. No wonder, they have pissed all of their customers off with their poor service.

1st year of hosting was ok, not too many problems.  But so far, year 2 is not that good, I was contacted by them (or a division of hostsave) to renew, I renewed, only to have my site go down soon afterward.  I had renewed the site with a parent(?) company of hostsave, but hostsave couldn't confirm this, after fighting with them about it they finally restored the service, jesus, what poor customer service

Though the uptime seemed decent and the autoforwarding of mail was nice,
I had the following problems while hosting with this company:
1) Some of my customers complained that mail sent to me would bounce for no apparent reason.  Customer support gave useless suggestions like, "don't put test in the subject line" and failed to resolve the problem.
2) This hosting company turned off my service without notification.  I was sent an email less than 30 days prior that automatic credit card renewal "would not go through" without any indication of when my contract would expire nor any indication that any attempt had been made to bill my credit card.

They have had very good uptime and that is the most important thing for me.  FTP access has been excellent.  Basically a good host for the money.  Customer support may not be the fastest, but what do you expect for 7.95/month? If you want cheap hosting, don't complain if they do not have a huge staff to answer immediately.  They do solve any problems within a day or two.

They claim to support PHP 4.  This usually indicates that they are using the latest version of it due to security reasons right? Not so.  When I tried to upload my site it didn't work.  Their tech support sucks.  I finally found out that they were using an old version of PHP 4 and didn't support the new PHP superglobals.  Bottom line DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY.

I have had Hostsave for about 1.5 years but am changing.  The main problem is the shared IP addresses.  It seems that my email is being blocked by a blacklist server because of activity on the IP address that I have and is shared by others.  My email to my family is being seen as spam.  Other than that, my only complaint is lack of webmail.

I've used HostSave for several years for a variety of clients of mine, and was so pleased with it, I'm using it to host one of my own sites.
br>
I've used Web hosts including small ISPs, giant ISPs, major universities, small colleges, and servers located in somebody's laundry room or garage.
br>
I find HostSave a great deal. It's like a Leatherman--the tool can do a lot, but the user has to have some skill and experience. If you can't figure out how to use a vise grips, calling up Tim Leatherman and whining at him won't change that. Nor does it take away from the quality of his multitool. It's just not your tool. I don't doubt some people have had problems with this host, that's inevitable, but a lot of the criticisms I read on this rating service seem very odd.
br>
I appreciate the presence of a low-cost host, where I put in the sweat equity. My clients would rather give me the money to develop top-notch content, which suits me fine.
br>
I'm not a techie, by the way. Just a farmer who's picked this stuff up over the decades.
br>
If you need a lot of hand-holding, or are using DabbleWare like Front Page to create a Web site, or if you aren't all that familiar with the World Wide Web, or have never developed for the Web before...then what you need isn't a discount host. Expect to pay a premium for premium support. You don't expect your doctor, mechanic, plumber, lawyer, or therapist to give you unlimited services for an hour's consultation.
br>
I've had trouble with only one thing--enabling CGI. Otherwise the service has been reliable and adequate. The speed has been fine, the Web tools have been great, the Web interface very clear. I've gotten good response from the customer support folks--I've only needed them once, and I didn't expect them to answer in 12 nanoseconds.
br>
The occasional glitches have been completely in line with the glitchiness of this technology--it happens. We're dealing with a global network of wires and electrons and microwaves, not banging rocks against each other.
br>
Some of the negative comments I've read about HostSave indicate that the users aren't bothering to RTFM. Like the ones who complain that they're billed on an annual basis. Duh--it says that right in the contract. Multiple times. Or who expect to get support for their various software packages from their Web host, never mind one charging so little. Double duh with dog doodies.
br>
In short, if you're a newbie, don't choose HostSave. If you have some skills, and are independent, can learn on your own, and don't need a lot of hand holding, this could be a good service for you. YMMV.
br>
Thanks for listening. Good luck with your search for a Web hosting service.

If you are at all considering HostSave, you should know their customer "support" is only by e-mail.  If you have a problem, you cannot call anyone their because they don't have any phone numbers.  And e-mail responses are rarely within the promised 24 hour turn-around.  I experienced this poor service when I tried cancelling service with HostSave.  They make it extremely difficult, apparently on purpose.

And be very careful with the credit card number you give to HostSave.  I got several unauthorized charges to my credit card for Internet porn after giving them my credit card.

Based on my negative experiences with HostSave, I believe their business practices border on fraud.  Beware!

These guys are pretty reasonable and are the beast host I've had.

Once in a great while they will be doing upgrades to their servers, etc, so things might be slow, but they post it so everyone knows.  The last host I had (EZPUBLISHING) was down frequently and never admitted it was their fault.  Unfortunately, I don't see EZPUBLISHING listed here, or I would rate them--they sucked.

Anyway, I haven't had any problems with Host$ave and they keep "upgrading" my plan to match the features/package that new subscribers get.  They are always making improvements and adding features, but the price stays the same, which is pretty cool.  I'm one of the pickiest people you will ever meet, and I don't have anything to complain about.

I had two sites with HostSave, both paid for with the same credit card. For some reason, they cut one of them off. I found out about it when I got a letter from a collection agency. They hadn't save the files, so even when I re-established payment, everything had to be uploaded again. That's not a reliable company.

HostSave seemed like a wonderful choice when I was starting in the Web design field a few years ago.  I found it for one client, used it, and was pleased with the response time and the tech support.  In time, I referred over 7 clients to HostSave.

Over the last year or so, however, HostSave's quality of service has deteriorated noticeably.  New client setups were not handled in a timely fashion.  They would take the money readily enough, but they would not complete the required technical setup for a few days.  And as problems would arise, tech support inquiries were taking longer and longer to be responded to.  In one case earlier this year, it took over 3 weeks to receive a reply.

The icing on the cake, so to speak, is when I finally started threatening to cancel a client a few months ago.  I had finally received little to no tech support about my client's downed site, so I emailed and said that I would cancel the account if I did not receive a reply within 24 hours.  You guessed it--no response.  But, lo and behold, when I contacted Billing to cancel, they handled that readily enough.  A business quick to jump to cancel a client but slow as molasses to help him? You follow the logic; I certainly can't.

So I heartily DISrecommend this business.  Had I done more research initially, I would not have spent hundreds of dollars and many hours of my time and my clients' time with these buffoons.

Run, run, run from HostSave.  You may pay more elsewhere, but at least you won't lose money or business due to their idiocy.

Hostsave Sucks - Review by Anonymous submitted on December 15, 2002
Customer's web site: N/A
Length of time hosted by this company: 1 year - 3 years

I have had several sites hosted by Hostsave for about two years, when they used to be at $6.95 and 40Mb webspace from memory.  Back then this was pretty good value for money, and one of the best deals around - especially having your own cgi-bin which not many companies let you have.

Over the months, webspace and bandwitdth got upgraded to 60mb and eventually to 100mb, however the price went up to $7.95/month.

Around this time the "new" control panel went up, and it was at this stage many, many problems started, amongst others - user htaccess/htpasswd lists were wiped, mails were lost, ftp access impossible, cgi scripts came up with weird errors and the rest of it.  To top it all off, they had the infamous stats "not updating" problem which resulted in one of my sites losing stats for the last two years.  And no, there was no backup.

Service was terrible, but back then the price was good and you simply had to put up with it.  However, it certainly was annoying that there was no telephone line, because once my credit card was declined for a change of address reason and my website was *instantly* suspended, and it took *SEVEN* days for Hostsave to respond to my pleading e-mails to recharge my card or do anything.  Seven days! Since I had a reasonably popular site this caused it to drop from Google, and I nearly lost the Yahoo listing - thank God Yahoo didn't re-spider at the time.

This was scary, and for sure, it was a cheap hosting provider, but their method of instant suspension coupled with no other form of getting in touch with them for days means that at the slightest problem you WILL go offline.

The biggest reason to switch was after reading this website, and figuring out that in 2002 $7.95 for 100MB wasn't so hot anymore.  The biggest factor by now was speed, though, and I was about to sign up for IcdSoft when I read that it suffered from slow speeds.

So I decided to go out on a limb and try Dot5 which was also receiving great reviews on this website.

What a FANTASTIC difference! The biggest difference compared with HostSave was plain speed.  Super fast CGI execution, I simply fell off my chair when I saw it.  HostSave's CGI execution was terrible.  Note this is not the same as simple HTML downloading, because Hostsave would sit and think for hours about my Perl scripts which Dot5 was now doing in milliseconds.

The other fantastic things about Dot5 have got to be value for money - $6.99 or whatever it is gets you something like 250mb webspace and tons of bandwidth - lots more than Hostsave's for the same money.

But bandwidth and MB aren't what's important.  What's important is support, and speed.

Dot5's support is also simply legendary.  In most cases, I can e-mail and receive a response within an hour.  Once I had a response in FIVE minutes.  It's amazing - never seen anything like it.

I have asked questions and have received detailed, *personal* responses - try mailing "support@dot5hosting.com" with some arbitrary question and judge for yourselves the *time* and if you're talking to a *human*.

The other thing that clinched the deal was that Dot5 offered monthly invoicing, which IcdSoft did not.

The only minor gripes about Dot5 are:

a) you get invoiced every month, there is no "credit card on file".  So go on vacation and you could get suspended.  However, Dot5's suspension policy is something like over 10 days after you receive your invoice.  But you can always pay yearly if you want.

b) You can't easily password protect /stats, but after a letter to support it was well and clearly explained how to do it with SSH.

Whilst this isn't supposed to be an ad for Dot5, I hope it encourages some people still stuck on HostSave to try something different.  Let HostSave die.  You need to stay competitive these days.  I am sorry.

The final nail in the coffin for HosSave, however, I leave to the end:

I had four domains with them, three of them not so important, but one really very important one which I wanted to get set up on Dot5 before I cancelled anything so I could simply change the Name Servers.

Anyway, I asked them to cancel one of my three unimportant domains which I already had set up on Dot5.

So what did they do?

They cancelled the important domain!!! Gone!!!!!!! Those idiots!!! I specifically said which one to cancel, and they go and cancel the wrong one.  Human error or just plain Hostsave crap!?!?

I immediately signed up for it at Dot5, and had it running again within a day, and Name Servers clicked over within the next 48 hours.

The irony was by the time HostSave responded to my e-mail it was several days later after I was already happily running on Dot5.

So no more HostSave.  You guys were great 2 years ago, but 2003 will hopefully see your demise.  Amen.

I have been a customer of HostSave for a few years now, and have decided to go elsewhere for my business.  They are inept on billing issues (and have billed my account without my authorization), and are terrible at communicating.  I highly recommend not giving them your business.

Same old story just like everyone else. No problems for a year, then when one came up, customer service was nonexistent. I cancelled my account with them, and then they had a COLLECTION AGENCY take me for a whole term that I WASN'T EVEN WITH THEM. If they haven't screwed you yet, they'll get you when you want to leave.

Pathetic support.
Technically good, fast serving, little downtime, but there is no phone support and it is just scary.

My site almost went down because i needed to change my card number, had problems with it, and was unable to get any email support.

Stay out if you want peace of mind.

I´ll move out as soon as i find something that's realiable, vene at 2x the price.

Crap, Dodgy, Pathetic, Useless: Avoid - Review by submitted on December 8, 2002
Customer's web site: N/A
Length of time hosted by this company: 1 year - 3 years
Date when last hosted by this company (as of December 8, 2002): 3 months - 1 year ago
Plan used: $7.95

Technical quality rating: 3 out of 10
Cost rating: 5 out of 10
Overall rating: 1 out of 10
I have had several sites hosted by Hostsave for about two years, when they used to be at $6.95 and 40Mb webspace from memory.

Unfortunately I have many accounts with this company and have spent more time troubleshooting and corresponding with the BBB, then actually working.  This company should be shut down.  I do not understand why it hasn't.  The BBB informed me that it operates under seven different names.  I beleive that they are always moving their location also.  You cannot get any support, email or phone.  Even the phone numbers that I was able to obtain from the BBB have been disconnected.  Once they get hold of your credit card number, they will continue charging it, even if you try to cancel.  I've ended up having to cancel several credit cards to get away from them and then they turned me over to a collection agency and have ruined my credit.  Even though I have gone to the BBB many times, they refuse to help with any problems.  I'm beginning to believe that they are in on the scam.  I have lost hundreds of dollars and many of my clients due to their fraudulent practices.  DO NOT ever do business with this company as they will ruin your business and your credit.

Hostsave is good for a barebones service.  The user has to stay on top of personal credit card number changes and not notifying hostsave.  Shut downs occur and its hell to get the site back up.  Not bad for the fee, I'd pay another few bucks to be able to speak with someone instead of waiting 24 hours.

I've been with hostsave.com for about 4 months.  Everything has worked pretty well for me.

There have been times when my email was slow, and wouldn't send.  This last time, I went out of town and wanted to forward my email to another, so that I could check it.  It was a hassle, trying to get it up and running, but David the support staff person, was vey helpful and responded to my requests fairly quickly, esp. for not having someone live to help.

I will continue to use them.

I've had my site on Hostsave just after the control panel transition. Looking at the other submissions, it appears to me that these other people are cheap, wanting a higher level of support for their sites, but unwilling to pay for it.

If you don't know what you are doing with hosting a site, then hostsave is not for you. At $7.95/mo it is targeted at people like me who don't need to contact support, know what they are doing with mail, scripts, and site design.

My site has never been down, and mail has only not worked twice, both of which were a local ISP issue, not one with the mail servers there.

This company is a classic fraud. There is no way to cancel the service. They never reply to emails and they do not have a phone number. The falsely state their business address. The only way to stop their fraudulent charges is to change the credit card account number.

first they didn't cancel my account like I requested. Then they kept billing me. Not only did they keep billing me but they were supposed to send me a quarterly email to pay from. Instead they kept taking money from my credit account auctomatically which is illegal. I never could get a history of my billings from their site, then I had to go through my bank to get them to stop billing me. I finally had a reply from them via email (absolutely no phone number to call!) and after they finally credited my account 6 months after the fact, I get a bill from a collections agency in the EXACT amount they had just credited me a month before!!! Now I am spending more time with the collections agency to prove these idiots don't know a damn thing about what's going on in their billing department. If they had a phone number I could've probably solved this issue in 5 minutes. Good luck getting anyone to answer your emails. Best advise, get a lawyer if they fool with your credit history in any way.

I had pretty good service and technical support for the first six
months and thought Hostsave was a pretty good deal. It was usually
up, and I only had one billing problem: they charged my credit card
a month early for a quarterly payment. When I contacted them, they
apologized promptly and told me that they would post it to the next
quarter's bill.

My problems started the next month when they charged my credit card
again. I did not want to pay two quarters in advance, so I contacted
them and asked them to credit my account. They did not respond, so
I notified my credit card provider which credited my account.  Instead
of contacting me or resolving the dispute through their credit card
merchant, Hostsave shutdown my website (already paid for in advance).
I sent them email, and they told me that they would not credit my
account and would not turn my account back on unless I paid them
again. I wrote back asking them to check their records and turn my
account back on. They never responded, and I switched to another
service provider. They then sent my bill to a collection agency.

I would have considered them a good service provider until they
made unauthorized charges on my credit card, violated their service
agreement, and committed fraud. If you have had poor service and
problems, know that you are not alone. If you have had good service
so far, consider yourself lucky (and warned). There is no reason
to stay with this provider and lots of reasons to leave.

I was contracted by a company to do some work on a site hosted by HostSave.  What a miserable experience! Customer service is completely non-existent.  There is no phone support offered at all and emails seem to be ignored.  I've submitted 3 support requests in a week and have yet to even receive an auto-response.  I DO NOT recommend this company at all.  They should be shut down.

The people of hostsave.com, which is owned by www.affinity.com, are using this domain in order to inflict cruel and unusual pain to its customers.  This horde apparatus, hostsave.com, must be breaking some kind of law and should be held accountable.  I believe that in order to sustain the abuse handed down by them, one must be a clinically diagnosed masochist.  The US government should institute public flogging and the people of hostsave.com should be handed a triple life sentence.

No response to my numerous billing inquiries after I found that my site was down.  After I finally received contact, they mentioned that they need more information.  I gave it to them and heard nothing.  I contacted them again and finally they told me they deleted my site from their server due to non-payment.  Then they go and say if I wanted to use them again, I needed to pay the past and future amount.  I did not know I owed them money to begin with.  Since I don't have a copy of my website on my computer (due to a major crash), I will not be using them.  I plead with all users to do the same.  If you have any questions for them, here are a couple numbers...

The most confounding aspect of hosting with hostsave is the appearance of a mystery folder on my website which is called 'web'. this folder repeats ad infinituum like so http://1photo.net/web/web/web/web/web/web/web/web/web/web/web and each instance of the folder contains a copy of the root directory.

After a week hostsave technical support has not been able to delete that folder, but instead told me that a) I have installed frontpage extensions and that b) I have uninstalled the Frontpage extensions,

which I never did anyways.
