I would have posted back here some positive news to add to my review from last month when the whole site went down if I had ever received an explanation of what the problem was, but I have not.  Even after repeatedly emailing akashik.net to find out what had happened I never did find out. 

To top it all off, I left for lunarpages.com while akashik was down and yet today I was charged another $12.95 on my credit card for another month of service! I'm told that I will be credited back and never billed again, but I heard that last month too.

In short, there are plenty of other hosts out there with redundant nameservers and internet connections that would be a better choice than akashik.net. 
akashik.net representative's response:

During June the datacenter we house our servers in had a fire. Upon services being restored it was apparent that our DNS server remained offline.

We chose to make the best of a bad situation and move our servers to a new datacenter as the DNS issue was going to prove difficult.

We've long since made this move and connectivity has never been better with fully burstable 100mbit connections, superior bandwidth providers, and servers in excess of 100% larger and more powerful. Many of the customers who have stayed with us have remarked on an improved 'speed' of their websites.

In Brenden's case he contacted us and requested a refund before closure of his account - something we were more than happy to do given the disruption he experienced.

Our largest regret over the incident was the failure of our primary e-mail contact addresses which meant we couldn't respond sooner to the issue and inform our customer base (this has also since been remedied.)

I remember Brenden and we were sorry to see him go. I personally remember him as an especially easy-going customer, though I feel the report here has been slightly harsh.

I REALLY likED these guys - very friendly, easy to work with, logically laid out way to maintain the site. BUT, NOW MY SITE IS DOWN, THEIR SITE IS DOWN, ANY OTHER SITES I CAN FIND THAT ARE HOSTED BY THEM ARE DOWN!!! No response to email, no 800 #, no message from them, I'm lost! Did they go under? Does anyone know what happened? This is NOT COOL. I've got a customer losing their mind that their site is down and there is time sensitive data not available to the public. Aauugghh!

As with Brenden's review this was due to the datacenter issue of June. Since the move to a far superior DC, and some large updates to both equipment and procedures we're pleased to say our service has been smoother than ever these past two months.

Gavin's site listed above is still hosted with us, and we look forward to working with him well into the future.

I've had good luck with akashik.net after moving from the very poor nomonthlyfees.com.  The support has been very friendly and fairly quick, though not always same-day.  Today, however, all of my sites (over a dozen) are down due to what appears to be a DNS issue.  I'm unable to retrieve emails and the only connection I can make to the server is via FTP.  Emails are not routing properly to my domains because of the DNS issue and I'm uncertain that my emails to support@akashik.net are being received.  This is very frustrating to say the least and I'm here looking to move my sites yet again to someplace more stable.

They really do a good job staying in touch with you...it is a fair price. They are not the cheapest but they are not expensive either and they do give good service

They always get back to me within a couple hours. They have good customer service. I have the basic plan where I get 100 MB for $9.95 a month. But no setup fees. So there are some cheaper, but it is a reasonable value.

great service! my site never seems to be down.  they're not the cheapest around but I'll pay a bit more for the quality I get
