Excellent service, few features for the $$$ - Review by D Zurn submitted on August 15, 2003

I'm using Pair for several years now and have absolutely no complaint with their uptime or email services. They even up the disk space quota from 150MB to 200 MB recently with no price increases.

However I seriously want to use MySQL and PHP but the cheapest way to do that is to go from $5.95/mo to $29.95/mo.

I seriously wish they would provide MySQL/PHP/CGI access at lower price points, but now I am seriously looking at plans like icdsoft that charge $5 for much more than I get with Pair.

As I said, the only problem with Pair is lack of advanced features for low-end accounts.

I'm an independent website designer who has steered my customers (mostly artists, musicians and non-profits) to pair.com for 3 years. Their basic FTP plan is inexpensive, comes with more disc space than most small sites will ever need, has generous transfer allowances and online tech help that's quick, intelligent and unfailingly polite.

I just signed on to their Advanced plan for my own business. I should have done it months ago. My only quibble is that their mail system can be a bit confusing at first for someone who's looking for an intuitive interface. Still, their online support crew answered all of my questions within a half hour and also went out of their way to make the system work for me.

I have been with pair Networks since early 1996.  They were among the only hosts back then offering CGI access, and have scaled well for me.

Their FreeBSD servers are extremely well configured for shared web hosting, with negligible downtime considering the degree of freedom they give their clients.

They are also very open and honest about their server configuration and technical problems, with this information posted to their public support site.

Apart from their technical excellence, for me the best part about pair is their strong and supportive user community.  pair provides an NNTP server where both regulars and newcomers can feel at home discussing just about anything, including criticisms of pair's service.

I have looked at other hosts prices at various times over the years, but have never really been tempted to leave the stability and excellent service I have received from pair.

pair provides a good service. Everytime I think about upgrading, pair adds more features. The doubled the disk space from 200 mb to 400 mb and increased the bandwidth from 9 gb to 12 gb. Now that added a MySQL database to the PHP. pair also added phone support to this hosting plan. They are improving their customer service area by adding more staff.

Lost me after 2 years - Review by submitted on May 1, 2003

Technically, Pair is excellent. They have no inexpensive PHP/MySQL package, which is a drag. And their pricing overall is not great.

Technically they are beyond reproach. Always up and fast.

However, over an 18 month period, they managed to overbill me a total of $400 and then treated me like crap when I tried to sort it out with them. Very rude. The mistake alone was inexcusable, but their attitude was worse.

They also have some very strict anti-spam policies which might restrict you. For example, they will refuse to send any email message with more than a dozen or so people on the address line.

I'm still looking for a good replacement, but I'm not going back to Pair.

Having dealt with tons of hosts over the past 7 + years, PAIR's uptime and reliable support combined with excellent pricing make it a great value and the best host I've ever worked with.

If they offered IIS, they would be my exclusive hosting company.

We'd had our site hosted by pair since 1997, we paid on time, they kept us up.  We attempted to market our site via a very limited email promotion.  pair got a few complaints (12 to be exact) and took down our site.  After explaining we are a family business, and our website is our only "store", and pleading with them, the turned us back on after a week (we lost $2500 in orders) then pulled the plug forever a month later.

These guys host 170,000 sites (statistics available on the web).  They don't give a damn about one little family business, and would rather respond to a dozen total strangers than take care of their long-time customers.

They shut our doors, we suffered unrecoverable loss, they didn't care.

RUN, DON'T WALK, AWAY FROM PAIR NETWORKS!!!!

When I started with pair more than 6 years ago, they were one of the cheaper providers.  Although their own prices haven't gone up much through the years, others' prices (and included features) have gone WAY down.

Pair is extremely reliable and offers a lot of great features, but they do nickle-and-dime you to death.  Great if you want to buy a developer account and run several different sites (with different URLs), something many providers won't let you do.

Down side: Tech support was fantastic in the beginning but has gotten slow and less responsive lately.  I think they've just gotten too big and the little guy gets ignored.  Cheaper accounts don't support FrontPage or CGI.

Pair is always up.  They're always fast.  Just look at their backup power systems for example, they can run indefinitely without public power.  They have a good range of plans, and super security.  The down side of that is that you don't get a lot of extras for free.

The service was originally recommended through a business partner, and provided to be a good deal, and had an easy setup for our small site.

I recommended Pair networks to a client (and also previous employer), after we had designed a small website for this client.  I had charged the client for time spent in their office ordering a low-bandwidth service, and Pair networks never confirmed the setup of the webspace through email, although my site had taken less than 2 days for this initial transaction to take place and I was up and running.

I am still waiting for Pair to respond after 2 emails sent to 2 email addresses.  Either I got the "bad luck of the draw", or else their customer service is very inconsistent, and/or they do not care about the "smaller guys" as much as they could.

Although this review might not be the MOST reliable, it is an accurate description of my relationship with them.

I now have to deal with the headache of charging the client for setup time on another server, and they must now call their creditors to resolve the issue.

I am considering switching to a new provider after my year-term is finished.

I run a small hobby site and my needs are modest. The intro package is more than enough for me and at a great price.

Tech support.. I havent had to use it much.. each time i do i get an email the following day with the answer to my question.

Up time.. I cant say for sure but every time i have ever went to my site its been fast and online. I get several thousand visitors per day and no one has ever told me the site has been down. At one point i switched domain names and the transition went very well.

I came here looking for a cheaper package somewhere else. After reading the reviews of other hosts im starting to rethink the switch.

technically excellent.  pair was one of only a handful of web hosting providers in 1996 (when i signed up) that offered "custom CGI", i.e. the ability to run your own perl scripts.  nowadays this is offereed by everyone.  pair also offered MySQL, analog, qmail and IMAP before the rest, and is now rolling out spam assasin, and operates their own ICANN accredited domain name registrar operations, with custom DNS services, once again, ahead of the crowd.

i dig pair :-)

I've hosted my site with pair for around four years now.  They've always been reliable, and their low-end FTP-only hosting is a great value for me, since I don't need any other features.

The few times I've needed tech support (usually forgotten password) they've replied promptly by email.  They don't offer phone support (at least for my account type) but that doesn't bother me.

They're also profitable which gives me some confidence they'll be around for some time.

There seems to be cheaper plans elsewhere, but I'm not about to switch to save a buck or two a month.

I have used pair for 3 to 4 years now and had 3 other people who's web sites I have done sign up on my recommendation. They have improved their control facility tremendously so things I used to do for my clients they can now easily do themselves.  The main things though are reliability and speed.

I have not had need of their mySQL servers but would not hesitate if I did.

Pair was my first host, and I currently use them for 3 sites.  They've been very reliable.  Haven't had much occasion to use tech support, but it's been decent.  My major gripe is that their cheapest account with PHP and MySQL is $30, whereas I can get it elsewhere for under $10.

On the plus side: good prices, good storage/transfer quotas, lots of tools available.

On the minus side: pretty difficult to find things out about the environment, IMAP support only so-so, and if you want something they don't support you can certainly install it - but you need to install it yourself, which can be a bit of work (and SpamAsassin can trigger resource limits that cause problems, for example).  But in general, I'm a happy customer.

I run several very active perl scripts.  From time to time the server needs tweaking, etc. to make everything work smootly.  Pair has alway been there.

The only reason that I gave them a 9 instead of a 10 is bandwidth alotment.  I need more ;-)

I use the cheapest plan and it has worked for me perfectly.  My website has NEVER been down in 4+ years, which I would give more weight to if I were a business.

As I reach my disk limits, I have researched and found that other hosts have much better traffic allowances for less money, but I'm not sure I want to give up the great reliability that Pair has given me.

I have had an occaisional email "burp" where I get an email after a few days delay or worse, but that has not been a major issue (again, because it is a personal site, not business).

Absolutely no problem from beginning to now. Stats and reports can be nicer looking though. I picked Pair because one of the major software depositories (Simtel) uses Pair. If Pair is good enough for Simtel, it's good enough for me. And Pair is just so inexpensive: 6 bucks a month for 100MB and 3GB transfer.

Very reliable -- to my knowledge, hasn't been down in over 9 months.  But the site is hard to navigate/understand.  Takes many, many clicks before I can view one of my image files, and I still can't organize/rearrange them.  I sent a long, detailed critique/wish list a few weeks ago.  Response I got was unfriendly and unhelpful.

I forward my auction email thru Pair.  Most of the time, the mail is delivered very quickly, but about 20% of the time, there are major delays.

I've used Pair networks for over 3 years on several sites, and am satisfied with both their service and performance.

Their pricing structure allows you to pay for only the types of features you want.  While there are cheaper hosts, none of them seem to match the connectivity or uptime I've gotten from Pair.

Thier $5.95 FTP-only site is a great deal if your needs are basic (info only, no interactivity or server-side scripting).  The 29.95 Webmaster account is the cheapest one which includes PHP, CGI and mySQL, but this account also provides a lot more storage and bandwidth than similar, less expensive accounts at other providers.  The ability to host multiple domain names for $1/mo each makes Pair fairly cost-effective, too.

Some aspects of their service could improve, and have improved -- it used to be difficult to update billing information, which could lead to interruptions in service if your credit card expired and they didn't have an up to date email address.  They now have a Web-based billing interface.

Since my first site, I've added half a dozen others to the same account, all on the same machine.  The vast majority of outages have occurred in service windows of less than 30 minutes, including a major upgrade of the system board and a major upgrade of the hard drive.

A few times other users have abused resources and loads have risen into the 40s.  The vast majority of the time the load is less than 0.5 I'm in the shell all the time.  They have also been good about increasing allowances without changing rates.

The software environment is sane, patches are applied promptly, tools you expect to find are usually there.  Other tools I've needed I was able to build myself.

I find the web interface clunky, but sufficient for the tasks I need to perform there.  It would kill me not to have shell access.  The web interface is no substitute for actually being there.

Tech support has usually been prompt enough (less than two days).  Answers tend to be terse and not as informative as they could be if you don't have your bearings already.

Online documentation is somewhat thin and disorganized.  It took me forever to figure out where they hid all the POP mailboxes that were part of my usage quota.  I finally found them using the "find" program which I later discovered was a violation of my usage agreement (running find in directory trees not my own).  Good thing they didn't rap me on my knuckles for that, I would have given them hell for not explaining the disk layout properly in the first place.

On several occasions I didn't find the documentation I needed on the pair site, but then later stumbled into it after trying to find external answers with Google.  Their help index sucks.

Another issue not properly explained is how to chmod your directory tree to protect private files.  I had some sensitive material in a directory protected by a .htaccess file only to discover that the other 400 users of the host machine could all read those contents locally (by default).  This information should be presented more prominently within the tutorials section.

I give them an eight for service because I so rarely need it.  The level of service they provide would be substandard if the system was flakey.

Bottom line: if you can work your way through a period of mild disorientation, the service is rock solid.

I have 20 sites running on 4 servers there, pumping 5 gigs a day.  The customer service response is immediate and effective.  Uptime is 99.9% and world-wide networking optimization is the best.  45% of my traffic comes from overseas and all countries report good connections around the clock.

I never got to use the e-mail service and never got an answer. Charges are irregular and I never got the irregular charges back to my account so I paid more that was in the contract.

Pair has been just great. I host 5 domains with them and have never had a serious problem.  Management interface let you do your own configuration. Great value as well.

One factor never discussed in reviews like this is the load on the server. I used best.com, since purchased by verio, and they thought 2,000 users per machine was great and load factors of 2-3 were great. Apache will start to choak at 30 or so.

Pair tris to keep only 300 users per machine and loads under 0.4. This means that 60% of the time the server is waiting. This means that a problem will not crash the machine.

Great growth plan. We are running 100 meg per day and can see a gig. pair offers a dedicated server that looks just like the shared account.

A great user community. I have learned a lot about how to manage the web server, much not documented.

I run a commercial directory and uptime and speed are essential. pair provides that.

I have one small site. The price is good for the features. I'd like to be able to get more advanced features for a lower price, but I'm not sure when/if I'll really need those features. They are excellent at communicating status and seem very professional.
