Overall rating: 10 out of 10
I have had very little cause to contact support or customer service with this company, but when I have, I've gotten very quick and helpful response.  There has been occasional downtime and occasional bounced emails, but nothing like what I saw with other web hosts.  All in all this is a fantastic company and I'm thrilled with them.

I host three different websites with them, and have been a customer for over a year now.

Good will doesn't make up for bad administration - Review by D Teed submitted on April 4, 2003

This is obviously a small company with good intentions and poor system administration.  I signed up about 10 days ago and I've had about 2 days of downtime.  On the first instance there was a hard drive failure.  It took out web4.  We were replaced on web12 about 8 hours later.  Would have been nice if there was RAID or backups, but neither exist at AssortedInternet.com All data was lost, but fortunately I didn't lose anything there I couldn't replace.  But I'm very glad I didn't host a database there!

Today was the last straw.  About a week after the hard drive failure, there is unexplained downtime for about 4 or 5 hours on web12.  The system comes back up but a URL to my domain's website shows some control panel we don't even use.  Later the website is up but email is bouncing back because the accounts are being restored.  Why have the SMTP server up and rejecting messages? This is stupid because it tells the sending client that the email address is a bad one.  A better choice is to shut down the SMTP service until all of the user or email accounts are restored.  That way the mail stays upstream and tries to deliver once in awhile.  No lost email, no impressions that your company just blew up in Iraq, just a small delay in email delivery.  This is just an example of the inexperienced system administration you'll be hit with at AssortedInternet.com

That is a great name for this service.  It is truely an assorted internet experience.

A total of 12 hours downtime since March 25th (today is Apr 4).

Hopefully I'll get my refund and I'll be on my merry way.

Despite ending all agreements with this company, months later, charged my credit card. Refuse to answer any emails about this.  I am disgusted and now seeking legal representation. I am hoping that now I make this public they will respond.  The choice is yours if you host with assorted internet I don't care one way or another, but,I know I will advise all my friends not to trust them, how can a ex host get away with charging you for services you don't have? unbelievable..
AssortedInternet.com representative's response:

Being that this page is the first that we heard of this, it looks pretty clear to me that this is some other hosting company just bashing us.

I assure you that we never have problems like this with billing. In fact, its one of the reasons we use 2Checkout.com - a 3rd party - for our billing. Not only does it afford the user additional securty, it allows them to contact 2checkout.com directly to deal with any disputes if we do not respond.

But in the possible case it isn't, I request that the user email me directly:

brian.teeter@assortedinternet.com

Be sure to include your order number, it should be something like: 19022-R123456

Once we get that information, we can stop billing and refund any moneys due.

Thanks - Brian

Before I came to Assorted Internet, I was a customer of Jumpline. They had a major upheaval and screwed up my two sites, so I went looking. When I read the only rating for Assorted Internet, I thought I would give them a try.

They are extremely professional outfit. They answered each and every question I had both before AND after I joined. They helped change my registration to point at their servers, unlike Jumpline and Network Solutions. Very helpful indeed!

On one of my sites, I need to use PHP to access a database. Jumpline refused to help me in any way. In six months, I was never able to even connect to the database. With Assorted Internet, I was up and running in a day. ONE DAY! (It seems that Jumpline had bad information about how to access the database, but I will never know-or care!) Oh yeah, Jumpline lost my mailing list-that was the last straw.

I would recommend Assorted Internet to any one interested in having their website hosted by a professional, thorough group.

Good mix of features, cost, and bandwidth - Review by Zergwyn submitted on July 26, 2002

When our design firm decided to begin doing serious database driven websites, we chose PostgreSQL of MySQL for a number of reasons. However, it proved to be very difficult to find a hosting service that would provide postgres as well as PHP and other features along with good bandwidth at a reasonable price. Assorted had all of that, as well as a lot of other features. Like a previous reviewer, I too changed my web URL, but unlike him I had no problems what so ever. I just updated my DNS info and let Assorted no. In addition, when I had problems using PHP they were willing to alter the module for me. I am happy to be using them, and would recommend them to any individual-medium size business.

Brian has done everything I have asked oh him, from changing configuartions to installing new software... and usually within a couple of hours of my request.  If it will take longer, he lets me know.  And you can't beat the price, either! Assorted Internet is BY FAR the best Hosting Provider I have ever used.  I will definetly be using them for any future sites I work on, as well as recommend them to my clients.

While I don't directly host with AssortedInternet (yet), I have a client that does.  This client (a Jewish temple) recently signed on with AssortedInternet and registered their domain name with a ".com".  All went well with setting up e-mail, etc.  Then the Temple decided that they wanted to join the rest of the "non-profit" organizations and go with a ".org" domain name.

I e-mailed AssortedInternet and explained the situation.  They replied quickly that it would be no problem.  And I mean quickly! It was bordering on an Instant Messaging Session! :-) We registered the new domain name through them as well (I know we could have saved a few dollars by going elsewhere, but this avoided potential problems with transfers - well worth the $10 extra we paid!), and let them know it was done.  They had the new site up and running within a day, with all the e-mail settings, etc. exactly as it was (except with the .org instead of the .com), without any problems or re-entry of data.

I would recommend AssortedInternet any time.  I am just waiting for my current contract to expire before switching to Assorted, which gives a better product for the same cost.

They want to help, but.... - Review by Joe Jansen submitted on June 5, 2002

I purchased their hosting plan and registered a domain name thru them.  Service was turned on, and all was good.  Then we decided that the name was incorrect, and I registered a new name thru a different regitrar ($10 at godaddy, $20 here).  A week and several attempts later, it still is not functioning properly.  The closest they came was setting the new name to redirect to the old name.  This causes the old name to be displayed in the address bar, something I specifically asked _not_ to happen.  I told them that I would prefer just to drop the old name in the bit bucket and use the new name exclusively.

Along the way, they have accused me of not registering the name (they spelled to wrong when they did the lookup) and for a day had my site redirecting to a different church.  Almost understandable, except it redirected off their servers to a different host completely!

All in all, I would say that they are friendly, and really want to help, they just can't seem to get it quite right.

I am therefore back at webhostingratings.com to find a new provider.  At least they have a 30 day money back guarantee!
AssortedInternet.com representative's response:

It is unfortunate that we were unable to meet Joe's needs. His description of what happened is fairly accurate with a couple of minor exceptions. The only one worth mentioning is that he actually purchased the wrong domain - which required the change. Not a big deal.

Then, the new name was very close in spelling to another church online. When we setup the redirect for him, and it redirected to that site (the wrong one) - we weren't aware that it wasn't his. (Normally we don't do DNS lookups on redirect requests. If the redirect works and points to the site that was requested - that is a sufficient check.)

Unfortunately in this case, we were redirecting to someone else's domain. Obviously, not what Joe wanted. And at this point, it was clear that Joe was ready to move to a different host.

Again, I wish that things would have turned out better. I offered some free hosting time to Joe to make it up to him, but his mind was already made up.

I hope that his new host has been able to meet his needs.

Take care,

Brian

Great Service! Avoid Jumpline - Review by submitted on March 20, 2002

Avoid Jumpline, I recommend AssortedInternet
For the last two years, I have hosted my site with jumpline.com.
Initially, I was thrilled with their service, support, and response time. However, I found that when I had more complicated problems, their support was sorely lacking. It doesn't matter that your response time is less than one hour if your response is useless.

In particular:

**I have never been able to SSH in from a Linux platform; I tried on 4 different computers from 4 different networks. Jumpline was distinctly unhelpful - "its not our problem, its yours"
**I have repeatedly asked jumpline for HTML::Template; they repeatedly responded that it "might be available in the future", but not necessarily soon.
**They lost my data twice, and their backups were always more than two months old. I have had to re-write scripts for my site more than one time.

Recently, jumpline "upgraded" their service. In the process, they lost all of our mail, re-installed two-month old data, lost the DBI programming module and refused to re-install it, set up a "virtual server" system that won't allow the use of scp for file copies, and implemented many other inconveniences. When they told me that they would not re-install DBI and I should re-write all my code to work without it, I started looking for a new hosting provider.

I found assortedinternet.com on webhostratings.com -- where they are rated a 10, but they were only rated by one person. I figured that was a good sign - people usually don't bother to rate services unless they are *unhappy*. For the same price as Jumpline, I was offered more space, more databases, more everything. THEN, when I e-mailed Assorted Internet about DBI and HTML::Template, their response was so refreshing -- "we ought to have it, but we'll be glad to install both for you if we don't" -- that I was immediately sold.

THEN - when I started moving stuff off the jumpline server onto the Assorted Internet server, I got such great support *as well* as a fast response time that I had my entire site working again in *ONE DAY*. Before I switched services, I had struggled with Jumpline for *TWO WEEKS* and had not made any progress in restoring the site they destroyed.

Most of the support Assorted Internet gave me has been simple question and answer, but there are two instances that stand out as extremely helpful -- the un-questioning installation of VIM (as opposed to straight vi) without argument and within hours, and
helping me work around what was offered through the online control panel when it limited my options. With Jumpline, I've been so used to not getting what I want and being thwarted when I try to do anything outside of the control panel that I have been stunned by the speed and *usefulness* of the support at Assorted Internet.

I'm posting everywhere I know to encourage people not to use Jumpline -- or to encourage them to leave Jumpline if they haven't yet. There *are* better hosting providers out there!!! I'm just sorry it took me 2 years to start shopping around....
