I used to have Prodigy. They were cool, I never had a problem with them. Then SBC/Webhosting bought Prodigy. They transfered my site ok, but it had lots of down time. I'm not kidding, about 10~15% of the time a pic or something else from my site wouldn't load. They kept Prodigy's outdated pricing. They charge $25. My new host charges $16 for the same setup.

Terrible Host - Review by submitted on June 24, 2002
Customer's web site: www.undercoveroperations.com
Length of time hosted by this company: 1 year - 3 years
Date when last hosted by this company (as of June 24, 2002): 3 months - 1 year ago

Customer service rating: 1 out of 10
Technical quality rating: 3 out of 10

Overall rating: 2 out of 10
Technical quality is rated 3 only because downtime was minimal, however tech support is awful.  I had multiple minor issues that became major issues because it took weeks, numerous emails and phone calls, and lots of aggrivation to resolve.
In case of attempting to set up a simple database driven website, after several weeks of them not being able to properly configure the database folder, it was easier to just give up and go to another host.
ALSO: Billing plain sucks! They outsourced or did some other arrangement with an outfit called OEM Webhosting, clearly the anti-christ of all hosts.  Cancelling or transferring hosts is rarely easy with anyone, but this was a true nightmare that involved me being transferred to no less than three seperate companies while they tried to find my account.  (SBC was one of the companies.)
And on the two remaining sites I have at Webhosting.com, I have just received notice that Webhosting.com has been bought by RadiantWebhosting.  I can imagine how smooth that transition will be! Surely, there has to be a good host out there somewhere? Now trying AIT, which judging from the reviews here, should also prove to be an adventure.
WebHosting.Com representative's Anonymous response:

Actually, SBC purchased InQuent Technologies in 2000 and sold it in late 2001 early 2002. SBC took the Webhosting.com name and verifiable paying customer base, or at least those who a separate consulting company had identified as active accounts. Those who were not verifiable were sold with InQuent and subsequently purchased by RadiantWebhosting. Webhosting.com is wholely owned and managed by SBC Communications. Of the customers who where transfered from InQuent with Webhosting.com, very minimal attrition occured. So you were only a Webhosting.com customer until early spring 2002.

I had lots of reservations about these guys as I heard horror stories AFTER I set up an account with them.  What I found later was refreshing.  Their tech support reps were courteous and helpful doing everything they could to recreate my issues and offer me no-nonsense understandable feedback.

What a horrible experience! My site was down for 2 weeks while they were waiting for a new server to arrive. One year after cancelling my account they keep billing my credit card. Stay away from this host.

Poor Customer Service - Review by Gay Walker submitted on May 29, 2002

They changed the username I needed for FTP without telling me, and worse still, the new user name contains and illegal character that won't permit me to use my current FTP client.  THey then had the nerve to suggest I change FTP clients, but I refused.  My current client keeps track of my site for me, doing incremental uploads, and makes my life hugely easier.  What a pain! I just started the ball rolling for changing service providers.  The worst part is that they didn't notify me of the change, so I only found out about the problem when I had a deadline to post some changes.  I never dreamed I might have to factor FTP transfer problems into the equation!!!

A simple change to the required user name would have solved my problem, but they said I should look for a different host instead!!!

Simply Awful - Review by submitted on May 1, 2002

Complete lack of customer service. Any tech support takes 24 hours. Telephone tech support can't do anything- they just open a ticket and promise 'you'll be contacted within 24 hours...'

Many customer complaints about web page speed, links not available, ect.  ASP scripts often don't work the first time- you need to hit 'reload'...

They recently downgraded the email capabilities of their corporate account- without warning me.  The CEO of the company was without email for 48 hours (the first 24 hours waiting for tech support to confirm that this problem was caused intentionally, the second 24 hours waiting for account changes to take effect.

Tried to use these guys to host the domain of our small private school. Tech support: willing but unable to help. Simple fixes tended to hose the whole ball of wax. We heard "the server is down... we hope it gets up again" a lot. Never could get FrontPage extensions to run for us.
I wouldn't refer anyone to Webhosting.

There support was horrendous...long hours on the phone waiting for staff.  Also, they made transitioning ownership and contact information practically impossible.

Only are only staying w/ this host for a few more weeks
because every few days the site would either
not be responding, respond *very* slowly,
or the CGI scripts would be mal-functioning.
Tech-Support was always there and responsive to
tell us that, yes, they were having difficulties
on their end! It was so unreliable we finally
decided we must take them up on their 30 money back guarentee.  We definitely did NOT receive
a 99.9% uptime, as they advertise.

I had a problem setting up a simple FTP tree. The permissions took over two weeks to get set correctly so someone other than "root" could log in. After multiple calls to tech support it still didn't work but they kept insiting it did...
