Where Price, Quality and Service Come Together - Review by Floyd Eakle submitted on August 4, 2003

I’m a drywall contractor not a professional Webmaster I do enjoy doing my site with Front Page and have had Front Page sites for 5 years. When I decided to do one for my drywall business I retained the services of this firm in May 2003 my account was set-up in a very timely manner and the information I needed to upload my site was e-mailed to me quickly along with where to download the free software. (I haven’t used any of the free software to offer any comments about it)

Customer Service: As a novice at web design I did encounter some problems, I’ve had contact several times with their support staff via chat room, e-mail, and telephone. In each instance the waiting time was minimal, the staff was courteous and helpful.

Technical Quality: To the best of my knowledge my site has been up and running every since I published it. The pages load fast even at times of peak usage.
Value: “No one likes to pay too much, but what’s worse is paying too little. When you pay too much, all you lose is a little money. When you pay too little, sometimes you lose everything because the item you bought could not perform the intended purpose for which it was bought. The common law of business balance will not allow a high quality item to be produced and sold for a low quality price. If you intend to buy the lower priced item, you should add something extra for the risk you are taking, and if you do, you will have enough to pay for something better.”

Extreme Web Hosting Account. Easy & quick access & upload. Love the FREE $300 of CoffeeCup Website Software. Chat support a little slow but works out. Email change must be done as directed. If you take TIME to read n follow directions, it works. I will sign on again. I also have 2 other site host (yahoo and MSS) and this is the best and easiest to manage for a Granma.

Blue Domino - STAY AWAY !!! - Review by my02wg submitted on July 2, 2003

Terrible Tech Support. Not very helpful or technical, for that matter. Server problems with FP extensions has my customer's site down for 2 weeks now and every time I "chat" with someone there, I get a different story. Very disappointed in their service. Would NEVER use them again nor would I recommend them. If you're really serious about a website, do yourself a favor and do NOT host it with Blue Domino. STAY AWAY - really !! Can't even cancel it without paying for their "free" software. The aggravation is not worth the software they give out. Our mistakes don't have to be yours.. You've been warned !!

Service has been reliable most of the time.  However, they've just (June 2003) changed e-mail servers & software for the second time in about a year, and both times were complete disasters.  Messages lost, complete reconfig of accounts required, and new services don't work as advertised - I can't believe they have the nerve to claim the latest system has been adequately tested.

Customer service is ok if you can get a human on the phone. They don't answer e-mails, at least not in a timely manner.  After 10+ minutes on hold yesterday, I finally decided to take the recording up on the suggestion to leave a voice message - voice mailbox FULL (guess they don't check voice messages either).

On top of that, no response by web or ftp servers for several minutes today.  Time to move the domain.

Web site up time has been very good. Mail had been shakey for a while, but they seem to have this under control now.  I've had very good response from the help desk and prefer to use their online chat for that purpose.  The real people I've talked to have tried hard to meet my needs.  It's a lot better than trying to do it myself.

I would echo much of the feedback from others.

Webmail -- Bad. Deletes e-mails arbitrarily, doesn't open the e-mail that you click on, etc.

Customer Service - Yes, they have live person chatting, but the results are far below standard.  I have been having problems sending e-mail to AOL or RoadRunner customers.  E-mail is blocked since the BlueDomino/CoffeeCup systems are on various Open Relay/SPAM lists.

First I was told that, although the BlueDomino/CoffeeCup servers ARE open relays, MOST hosting companies are set up the same way.

Then I was told by someone else that they are NOT open relays, and that being on these SPAM lists is merely a misunderstanding...  And that their president ("J") is working directly with RoadRunner to fix this.

Further, by three separate "help desk" people, (including Roland Barrera, who is responding to some of these comments), I was promised that I would be moved to the "new servers" within 24 hours, and that it would alleviate my issues with sending e-mail.

Those promises started about a month ago.  To date, no response from the company, and the problem persists.

As of this minute, I am still a customer, but I am moving to a new host tonight.  There are WAY too many companies willing to host.  What differentiates them is customer service, and there is NONE here.

I have been using Blue Domino for almost 2 years and have been very pleased. I have an "Ultimate" account and just use this account as the place to serve images for my web site. I have close to a gigabyte of images and traffic of about 40 GB per month. Response time is very good, and the server is rarely down.

I have hosted at BD for over 2 years.  When I first got the hosting, it was unlimited, then a year after, I found out that they (without telling me) have moved me to a lower hosting plan, same price, but less space, less band width, less emails.  They have great service, but when asked why, the tech just responded that is the way and period!!!.  Still with them, even after they have changed like 2 times servers, have a lot of problems with the SMTP (open relay server) they provided a quick secure server solution, but what about ALL the lost emails???, and this happened to severall sites.  we have to recreated every single account, and now they just changed againg to a new mail server, and againg we have to RECONFIGURE every single email, since they just move the names, but the passwords, autoresponders, etc. are lost!!!.
And I haven´t mentioned the webmail or should I said nightmaremail!.  It shows some emails, when you try to open one, it displays anotherone, and you better not try to delete one, it may delete another, and so for.... I hope with the new server all this will be gone, (they say) but just makes you wonder.
After all, good service thru the live chat, good responses, and most of the times you get the problem fixed in a jiffy, some times takes more "guts" but in a few words, good site (if you do not deppend of your email), good software (have used just a couple of them, the rest don´t thinks so!!!, and reazonable prices!!! Kind of expensive!!!!

Uptime and speed are good.  Prices are good.  Support is bad to awful.  They have a chat window that goes something like this:

Me: Hi
BD: Hello.  My name is ____.  How may I help you.
Me: I'm having problem x.

10 minute pause like I have nothing better to do.

BD: I'm sorry you're having this problem.  Let me check into it.

10 minute pause

Me: Hello????

5 minute pause
BD: Sorry for the delay.  I will have to talk to an admin when they decide to show up.  You will be contacted by e-mail.
BD: Is there anything else I can help you with.

Me: Yes
Session terminated by host.

(never notified by e-mail)

In addition to this they use some e-mail scheme that doesn't allow me to send e-mail to several domains such as AOL or Road Runner.  It gets blocked as spam.  I'm not sure if that's something Blue Domino is doing or if it's at the other end, but it's incredibly annoying not to be able to send an e-mail to friends, family, business contacts etc.  Many e-mails I send out gets returned as undeliverable which has resulted in lost business.

The value of this host's service declined rather than improved. Two server migrations during the two years created down-time which was not compensated for, despite their 99.99 Percent uptime guarantee. Multiple problems receiving email through simple web forms have yet to be resolved. Their staff obviously cannot solve their recent, complex problems and issues with their servers' functionality to provide consistent good service. It's not a bargain when my site is down or not functioning due to their inability to solve problems which they've created. Tech support is sloppy and inconsistent. Having to re-describe the issue multiple times, to different personnel who don't seem to work as a team and communicate, after three months of a continuing problem is not satisfactory.

Decent hosting and support lousy email - Review by Michael Bonincontri submitted on March 14, 2003

Have been using Blue Domino for a little under 2 years. The hosting of my web site has been fine. I've gotten good support when I've had issues but I am planning to switch to a different provider a couple of months, primarily due to problems with the web mail feature.

Emails get lost, attachements can not be read. If the spam filter mistakenly moves a message out of the inbox to the trash, you can not move it back to the inbox.

If a message has been marked as being spam and has been moved to the trash, it makes other messages in the inbox unreadable since the index is messed up (until you look in a different folder) to remove the listings from the inbox.

While the price of my service hasn't change, the limits have which makes this host a little pricey given how bad the web mail feature is.

I can no longer recommend Blue Domino - Review by Bill Brandon submitted on March 12, 2003

I have three sites hosted with Blue Domino, and several domain names registered with them. Two of my sites are hosted under their basic plan and one is hosted under Extreme.

You asked for specifics. Get a cup of coffee. This is going to be specific.

I have become increasingly frustrated by a number of problems, but the largest problem is with their email. First, I cannot send email through any of the accounts from Outlook. Repeated contacts with Customer Service have not been able to solve this problem. (I have other accounts with other DNR/Hosts, and have no problem sending email from those accounts through Outlook.) I can only send from WebMail, which is not satisfactory for two reasons. I need to be able to send newsletters and autoresponders, which you can't do from their WebMail. In addition, the email server frequently does not respond - logging in often involves waits of five minutes or more, and sometimes fails completely due to timeouts.

When I call Customer Service or go through Live Person (the dialup Customer Service number is often busy), the personnel are polite, they try to be helpful -- and they are also totally ineffective at getting the problem fixed other than temporarily.

In addition to these problems, it is not unusual to experience extreme delays trying to access my sites. This is just really unsatisfactory.

Two emails to the President have gone unanswered. I have to admit that I was just a bit offended by a line in the autoresponder I got back after sending the last email: "As you can imagine, I am a very busy person." (Hey, pal, I run three businesses myself, and I would never trivialize a customer's importance to me with a comment like that. When you have one of your employees take that expensive car of yours in for service, how would you feel if the mechanic called you up and said, "I'm a very busy person, and I'll get around to your problem whenever I can." - and then when you finally got the car back, it still had the same problems?)

If Blue Domino can't turn it around soon, I am moving my sites and service elsewhere.  I regret having to air these problems publicly, but what else can I do if the company won't work with me? If they fix these email problems and the uptime deficit, I will happily post an amendment to this evaluation. I would really like to see my fellow Texans succeed. If they just can't manage to find the time in their busy lives to deliver the service I am paying for, then it's adios muchachos from me.

I am at a loss to understand how some people seem to have great experiences with Blue Domino, and some of us consistently get the short end of the stick from them. I am not new to the Web, not an AOL kiddie, and have plenty of technical understanding. This hosting experience has not left me with a great deal of confidence in Blue Domino - I have to wonder who is running the show, and whether these problems and the inconsistency indicate fundamental troubles.
Bluedomino.com representative's response:

I do understand your frustration and I do want to solve your problems. we have had a few setbacks with our mail system and we are actually moving customers now to a new mail system which has been extensively tested to work out any bugs. We understand how much email is worth to customers and we are striving to clear up any issues. If you like I will be happy to set you up with a test account just email me your domain name and password I will send you the set up info. If you like it I can move you to the new mail system at your request.

Overall, this hosting package started out great, and ended badly. At first, it was unlimited/unmetered space and bandwidth with freat tech support, and then the package got progressively less generous. The only way I would have known was to logon to their homepage, there was never an email sent to me about changes to the hosting package. The tech support staff were NOT helpful - and some seemed quite unqualified for the job. Also, they automatically renewed my account charging me over 220 dollars without notifying me. Other minor annoyances include: not being able to choose username/password, no ssh/telnet access, no MySQL databse (I think they have since added this though), and of course - the automatic credit card charge.

I've been hosting with BlueDomino for about two years now, and I have only a couple comments to make. Fist, when they switched servers, everything (on my site) went along fine, but other sites had more problems. I'd like to just say something, the internet is a giant web, when you send or request something, it needs to search the entire web. Packets can get lost or take a while to preccess. Second, only one server to my knowledge had problems and that issue was resolved rather quickly. Third, there was an issue with the mail server, causing ALL accounts to be deleted, which was a major loss. They have taken precautions so as this not to happen again.

BlueDomino web hosting is a great deal. The services and hardware are well worth your money. If you think you would want a little more, just wait, I've heard about a couple new features that would be greatly appreciated for all hosted sites.

I've been using Bluedomino for almost two years and was very happy with the service for the first year.  Unfortunately, email service has grown very poor.  I operate a number of high-traffic message boards used for history discussion.  The message board software allow for "automatic response notification" and the production of a "daily digest" of messages.  Posters choose if they want to be notified when there message is responded to and the digests are sent only to subscribers.  Bluedomino has continually made changes with their "sendmail" settings and their "anti-Spam" software to the extent that any use of "sendmail" is almost impossible.  The online support is awful.  I believe they have a bunch of "tweakers" at Bluedomino who care little for the effect that there "probably undocumented" changes have on their customers.  Without resolution to this problem I will have to move to a new service.  I started out using the CoffeeCup products and then bought their web service.  I doubt I'll stick with them after this experience.

There prices are going up and my plan, which was originally unlimited is now very limited and getting more expensive.

I thought a lot of CoffeeCup and Bluedomino.  Apparently they're on the decline.

I've been through a bunch of hosts--the good, the bad, and the ugly. I learned the hard way: when it comes to hosting, support is the numero uno criteria for selection. Price is only a secondary concern. For most of the past year, Bluedomino.com has been the web host for Fixitnow.com and they are mucho supremo grande! They have 24/7 LIVE tech support right at their website via Live Person--like what I have at my website (except you ain't gonna get me 24/7). All webhosts will occasionally have technical glitches, that just comes with the territory, lot's of stuff to break down, dontcha know. What makes the difference is how they deal with it. They're easy to deal with and get ahold of.  I've talked to those guys at Bluedomino at 3 am and on a Sunday live, at their website.  Problem handled, or at least I knew what was going on.  I've called a couple times and never had a problem getting a live person on the phone.  I just don't understand where all the spleen venting I'm reading is coming from.

When I signed up at first I was a bit worried since I have never heard of Bluedomino before, however I was shocked to see that they have real 24/7 service. If anything goes wrong I know I can jump in thier live chat or call them up and know I will get an answer in a few minutes. My last host I had, I had to wait for an response to my support emails or god forbid use thier bad ticket systems. BLEH. All in all i have had no problems with Bluedomino, they have always been there when ever I need help.

The hosting part was great--no problems, no downtime.

However, the email was a constant problem starting from the time I began hosting with them.  They were using an internally developed server based on QMail.  It constantly lost mail--a real issue when you're trying to negotiate a contract remotely.  Their webmail client is especially bad, because once it loads email--there's no way to export it! The webmail acts as its own client, which means once email has been loaded into it there's no way to get it out unless you export it.

They claim to be moving to sendmail to increase reliability of their mail, but the inability to export mail was the worst thing that could have happened.  You can't even get mail out if you login as an administrator, because they store it on separate, inaccessible, servers.

The really bad part was dealing with technical support.  All technical support could offer was one-line replies to questions, and wasn't willing to suggest or try any solutions.  All around, a poor experience unless you just want some vanity pages and no email.

The first year with this provider was great. Decent prices and lots of good free programs. This year I've had several problems with the e-mail that resulted in downtime and lost messages. Sometimes i can't attach files. You don't get the messages you click on- its sort of a surprise as to what you get to read. I'm not renewing!

We've been hosted on bluedomino for two years now. The first year was quite uneventful. We received good support, site software and almost impeccable uptime. After the first year was over things started going sour. First they began experiencing really bad e-mail issues (lost e-mail, untransmitted e-mail, poorly performing webmail application, etc.). Then they began having account reconciliation issues (our order for our initial hosting plan was paid with one card. The extension was paid with a different card - same name and address - and as a result they inadvertently terminated the account - even after they phoned and e-mialed back that they understood the change and had processed the payment already. It took about 72 hours of total downtime to reconcile the account and we had to rebuild our own files because their backup was over two weeks old. The e-mail problems are recurring (monthly) and now we are starting to experience random incidents where our site can't be found. Bluedomino has blamed it on a misbehaving DNS server. They have given us a credit for a few months of service, but it doesn't make up for the embarrasement of explaining it to our partners, employees and clients. We're going to hunt around for a better host. In the meanwhile, we're on the verge of signing with a host that does nothing but e-mail.

Blue domino does not have a complaints process. It shuts down if you mention the word

I cancelled my annual subscription last year but they still took it out of my account.
I have repeatedly asked for it back Not a word in reply

They the most unproffessional company I have ever dealt with

I have been hosting with BlueDomino for well over a year now. Yes, they transferred to new servers. I was informed well in advance and advised to backup everything. I did, but I didn't need it. My site has NEVER gone offline, my email servers ALWAYS work, and tech support has been among the most responsive I've ever dealt with in my 15 years of computer work. Some people probably should just stick to AOL.

for Coffeecup to host this, slap in the face - Review by violetta submitted on October 14, 2002

We all are familiar with Coffeecup services, which is when we see their accolades for Bluedomino.com we respond positively.  You would be greatly mistaken to do so.  I had reviewed prior negative comments of others and I thought they were unjustified.  Rest assured - they were! Bluedomino.com is probably the most tragic service i've ever used, ever.  First off when you go ahead and order with them, they dont bother sending you a receipt (email) of services requested.  They tell you it will be active in 30 minutes.  Nothing! The next day, some 14 hours later, still nothing! You try and get so called "live help" and there is no reply.  And when an "operator" after 10 minutes does come on, any questions you ask will be respoded to 2 minutes later.  You ask them why, and they say that they are "multitasking" (taking on more than one call).  Therefore it is not uncommon to have a telephone call of 2 minutes, via "live" option dragged to 30 minutes.  There are so many problems w/Bluedomino!! Ask them why you cant choose a logon/password and they'll tell you that this is their policy and you have to use what they assign.  (This is NOT the industry norm, ladies and gentlemen).  Ask them for ftp assignment administration and they likely reply in kind.  There is only one logon option.  And basically your webmaster will have access to other pannel such as your credit card information and address, all can be altered.  Bluedomino.com is a fantastic joke.  The senior representatives have on numerous occassions been asked to respond to the above charges.  To date, some one week later, they havent bothered.  I also emailed the president of this company, reported to be a stickler for details.  It doesnt seem that way, does it.  Bluedomino without question is the shoddiest servers i've ever seen.
Bluedomino.com representative's response:

Hello,

I would like to comment on the negative comments you have instilled on our company. Bluedomino.com is not only a good webhosting company to work for and a great provider of web space but has fantastic tech support. You have stated that your account was not active within 30 minutes, all accounts are active within 30 minutes. Let me explain what happens after you get to the account will be active screen. The account comes to a table called the Pre-approves here, it then is viewed by a supervisor which then checks, IP address, billing and contact information. If everything is correct then we push the domain name through and you will then receive your setup e-mail. If for some reason the domain does take longer than 30 minutes it is for the reason we might think it is suspicious or the IP address does not match. After this, we call the number on file and ask for confirmation of the purchase. Once the domain name is confirmed order, we then send out the setup e-mail. As for our Tech Support, they handle no more than three chats at once and we monitor how long it takes them from the time a customer comes in to live chat to when they are responded to, which takes less than 2 minutes. It is very common to have a chat to be over than 30 minutes for the reason the customer on the other end may be new to the webhosting arena and we try out best to walk them through the steps of FTPing, setting up mail, stats, and any other assistance they may need. The reason we do not allow you to choose a logon/password is because the password are random and its much harder to figure out the password by any known personnel trying to get your information, many customers like to use a password that is very common such as a name, street, or birth dates. We understand that many users do not like to give out password over the phone or in live chat and we by any means do not like asking for it so we rather have it on file, and can change it to a password we generate. I apologize for any inconvince you may have received and I would be more than happy to talk to you about it and hopefully have a good relationship with you.

I've been hosted by bluedomino for over one year and was happy with them.  Then in the spring they "migrated" servers and lost several days of my email.  Again in Aug 2002, they had some sort of "outage" during an "upgrade" and lost another batch of my email.  These mistakes can happen and I would forgive them for such tech problems if they would simply respond to questions and send info to their customers.  They have been very lax in getting info to their customers even after repeated requests.  They are also now raising prices, again without notifying customers - I only found out because I happened to go to their web site intro page today. I am now looking for alternate hosting companies.

very good setup of URL which went without a hitch largely helped by "cuteftp" software but the emails is hopeless.  Took several weeks to get running and still loses attachments or puts them in the body text as garbage.  cannot import addresses etc etc.

Customer service is horrible, the best you can get is a clueless chatbot/kiddie.  Constant unplanned outages.  They recently moved sites to "new servers", which was a horrible fiasco with data getting left behind, sites not resolving, etc.  Mail servers are out frequently for hours/days.

Until recently, I was very satisfied with bluedomino.  Prices are quite reasonable.

but Aug. 6, 2002, their servers all went down (seems to be mail servers only), and it has now been at least 16 hours....  they advertise 99.999% uptime.  after today (as I write this, the mail servers are still not up), they will need 30 years of uptime to fulfill their promise.  There is not even a notice on their website informing customers of the status, or what is going on.  the poor customer service people!

Don't waste your money on this service you will never get it back. The service sux the %99.9 uptime is in there dreams. Don't download there software or you will be charged for all of it. $149 for software that is ..... If this don't detour you don't I mean don't pay for a year at a time. Download there software from another source before downloading it off there site.. Once you have downloaded from them you own it.
Bluedomino.com representative's response:

We're sorry you were not happy with our service. As always, you are (were) entitled to a refund on your hosting. Concerning the software, it is shareware. If you download our products from any location and intend to register, you provide your credit card information. We don't have your credit card information on file and just choose to charge you. Our purchase pages are very clear and easy to understand. Unless you, yourself completed the registration process online and signed up for one year, we wouldn't have had this information in the first place. It sounds as though you signed up for yearly hosting and cancelled hoping to keep the software and not be charged.
I'm sure if you had contacted us, we would have done our best to resolve the issue.

The company recently tranferred accounts to new servers. That's good, right? Only problem is, much of my site has been left behind and after two days, my email still isn't working. When I got to their live tech support, the kids there just tell me everything will be fine as soon as the new stuff propagates through the web. I phoned the company and got no response though I waited half an hour.
